I Saw Myself in Your Face

— POEM by Trandafir Sîmpetru

(Translated from Romanian)

Trandafir Sîmpetru_Romanian Poet

White children waved at us,

from the shore scented with almonds.

It was a hungry cry that lit our kiss,

a reverse migration. We were

sated and tender, we bewildered constellations,

we were like drifting ships.

We descended at dusk onto the shore,

scorched by heat. Our steps resounded,

pressing into grains of sand

wrapped in death.

We were exiled by stars,

and the mineral sleep that sighed from afar.

It was just us and the white birds,

rainbows burning through clear sounds.

I watched you lying on the sand,

deserts in your eyes,

the gulf of your breasts,

words of love resting on my lips.

Your eyelids were butterflies,

your body a weeping willow.

I saw myself in your face,

and in the window of your soul,

snowflakes crashed.

….
