Do
come.
I’ll
not meet you at home.
I
have hidden door key under the pantile.
For
lunch,
You
can have chutney,
Of
challis and garlic,
With
maize roti.
I’ve
put your favourite Lorca book,
On
the broken cot.
I’ll
be late.
Do
stay if you like.
I’ve
to go to hospital and then to police station.
The
bastards have burnt alive a girl from our street.
I’ll
be late.
Don’t
lock the door from inside.
I
know you’ll be angry,
With
touch of nightmares.
I’ll
set out,
like
that only.
Daya,
with people of my street,
When
the street is still snoring,
I’ll
keep a watch,
With
lantern of my soul.
They
will start barking,
Like
dogs,
I’ll
drive them away,
Till
the street awakes,
Just
like,
Your
poems.

Jayant Parmar
Born on 11 October 1954, a well-known Indian Urdu language poet, artist and calligrapher, writes both in Urdu and Gujarati. He is known for raising Dalit issues in his poetry. Parmar was born in a poor family. Since he had developed an appreciation and taste for Urdu poetry while living in the walled city area of Ahmadabad, he taught himself Urdu from a language learning guide at the age 30 after. Parmar has published seven collections of Urdu poems: “Aur” (1999), “Pencil Aur Doosri Nazmein” (2006), “Maanind” (2007), “Antraal” (2010), “Nazm Yaani” (2013), “Giacometti Ke Sapne”, (2016) and “Nuqta Aur Doosri Nazmein” (2019). He is recipient of Sahitya Academi Award, 2009 for his book “Pencil Aur Doosri Nazmein”, Bhasha Bharti Samman, 2006 for “Aur”, Gujarat Sahitya Academi Award, Bhartiya Dalit Sahitya Academi (2002) and Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar Jeevan Gaurav Puraskaar (2020) etc. His works has been translated into Hindi, English, Punjabi, Assami, Telugu, Bangla, Kashmiri, Tamil, Kannada, Malyalam, Nepali, Marathi and also in various other languages like Slovenian and Spanish.

Born in 1953, Dr. G. K. Vankar is a Professor of Psychiatry at a Medical College in Gujarat. He is translator and blogger. He has translated extensively Gujarati Dalit Literature .He has also translated several poems and short stories from other Indian languages, especially Dalit Literature, in Gujarati. Dr. G. K. Vankar has published translations Jayant Parmar’s Urdu poetry in English titled ‘”Inkpot and other poems”, 2011.
