When Manu Entered Our Street

The turban rose,
to the top of a stick,
dipping hands in kerosene.
The pot hanging in the neck,
filled up dynamite,
in the ribs.
The third sleeve,
Set out on the road,
With banners fluttering like a rebel.
The broom on the back,
Sharpened itβs claws,
Like the feathers of porcupine.
The stick in the hand,
Attired itself in fire.
When Manu entered,
in our street with Manusmruti.

Manu, Hindu law giver. Manusmruti is his text of Hindu laws. Historically it was publicly burnton 25 December,1927Β by Dr.B.R.Ambedkar as it s laws are discriminatory for dalits and women.

Jayant Parmar
Born on 11 October 1954, a well-known Indian Urdu language poet, artist and calligrapher, writes both in Urdu and Gujarati. Jayant Parmar is known for raising Dalit issues in his poetry. Parmar was born in a poor family. Since he had developed an appreciation and taste for Urdu poetry while living in the walled city area of Ahmadabad, he taught himself Urdu from a language learning guide at the age 30 after.
Jayant Parmar has published seven collections of Urdu poems: βAurβ (1999), βPencil Aur Doosri Nazmeinβ (2006), βMaanindβ (2007), βAntraalβ (2010), βNazm Yaaniβ (2013), βGiacometti Ke Sapneβ, (2016) and βNuqta Aur Doosri Nazmeinβ (2019). He is recipient of Sahitya Academi Award, 2009 for his book βPencil Aur Doosri Nazmeinβ, Bhasha Bharti Samman, 2006 for βAurβ, Gujarat Sahitya Academi Award, Bhartiya Dalit Sahitya Academi (2002) and Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar Jeevan Gaurav Puraskaar (2020) etc. His works has been translated into Hindi, English, Punjabi, Assami, Telugu, Bangla, Kashmiri, Tamil, Kannada, Malyalam, Nepali, Marathi and also in various other languages like Slovenian and Spanish.
